Quick answer — The federal agencies publish three things clearly. Roundworm and hookworm are genuinely zoonotic and persist in soil, so the CDC advises picking up pet waste daily. Giardia is the risk this guide has to correct rather than repeat: the CDC’s position is that catching it from a dog is unlikely. And the EPA treats pet waste as a water-quality problem, not only a yard problem. This guide quotes each source and links it, and flags the claims that have no source behind them at all.
Most of what circulates about dog waste is directionally right and specifically wrong. The agencies publish enough to answer the question properly, so every claim below is either a quotation with a link or an explicit statement that no source supports it.
Is dog poop dangerous to humans?
For two parasites, yes, and the mechanism is published in detail.
Roundworm. The CDC states that toxocariasis “can spread to people through contact with the feces (poop) of dogs and cats with roundworm.”1 The timing is what makes prompt removal matter: freshly passed eggs are not yet infective and need 2–4 weeks in the environment to become so.2 Waste removed before that window closes has not yet reached the infective stage.
Once eggs do mature, they are durable. The CDC states they “can survive for months, or even years, under the right conditions,” and its DPDx reference describes Toxocara eggs as extremely hardy and able to persist in the environment for years.2
Hookworm. The route is different and more direct. Eggs pass in feces and hatch into larvae in soil or sand; larvae that then burrow into unprotected skin cause cutaneous larva migrans.3 The CDC’s DPDx reference states that infective larvae “can survive 3 to 4 weeks in favorable environmental conditions.”4 Bare feet and hands in the grass are the exposure, which is why this one concerns yards where children play.
The AVMA’s guidance on both is a single sentence: “Immediately pick up animal feces from your yard, garden, and public areas.”5 The CDC’s is equally short: “Always pick up dog poop and dispose of it properly.”6
What about Giardia and parvo?
These two are where published guidance and popular claims diverge most, so both deserve stating precisely.
Giardia is the one item on the CDC’s dog-associated list where the agency pushes back on the obvious inference: the CDC states that people are unlikely to catch Giardia from a dog, because the Giardia types that infect dogs usually differ from those that infect people.7 The organism itself is persistent — the CDC states it “can survive for weeks to months outside the body (for example, in soil)“7 — but persistence in soil and transmission to a person are separate questions, and the second one has an answer that most yard-service copy gets backwards.
Canine parvovirus is a dog-to-dog problem rather than a human one, and the published description is qualitative. The AVMA states that the virus “is resistant to heat, cold, humidity, and drying, and can survive in the environment for long periods,” and that “Even trace amounts of feces from an infected dog can contain the virus.”8
Note what the AVMA does not publish: a duration. There is no figure on that page for how long parvovirus persists in soil, so no figure appears on this site either. A specific number attached to parvo survival is a claim someone added.
Why doesn’t waste just break down in the yard?
This is the question where invented numbers are most common, so here is the honest version: no primary source in this research publishes a decomposition rate for dog waste. Any page giving you a tidy figure for how long it takes is giving you something it made up.
What is published is the climate the yard sits in, and it is worth knowing because it runs against the intuition that winter handles the problem. There is no weather station in Germantown; the nearest long-record station is Memphis International Airport, and the 1991–2020 normals for it read as follows.9

Two features of that table matter. The July normal daily maximum is 91.9 °F and the August normal is 91.5 °F. And of those 44.4 days a year at or below freezing, none fall between May and September. The seasonal pause a homeowner imagines does not appear in the record.
Where does the waste go when it isn’t collected?
Into the water, according to the EPA. Its pet-waste best-management-practice fact sheet states that pet waste is “a leading source of nutrient and bacteria pollution in urban streams and waterways.”10 The agency’s nutrient-pollution guidance adds that pet waste “contributes nitrogen, phosphorus, parasites and bacteria to water bodies when it is not disposed of properly.”11
The local version is documented too. The Memphis and Shelby County Stormwater Management Manual lists “animal excrement from pets” among the principal bacteria sources it addresses, and carries a dedicated best-management practice for pet and animal wastes.12 Germantown’s own stormwater drains to the Wolf River and Nonconnah Creek.13 Those are two separate sources making two separate points, and this guide does not merge them into a single claim about Germantown’s water: the City’s stormwater page does not itself address pet waste.
How do you pick up dog poop without touching it?
The AVMA’s published answer is a barrier, not a product: “use a scooper, plastic bag, or something else to cover your hand.”14 The CDC pairs that with washing hands after any contact with a pet or its waste.6
No federal agency ranks scooping tools, tests brands, or publishes a comparison — so this guide names none. The hygiene rule is sourced; the shopping advice is not, and pages that blend the two are presenting an affiliate link with a CDC citation stapled to it.
